EASTN-DC Cardiff’s first Artists in Residence will arrive in October from Germany. Carolin Liebl and Nikolas Schmid-Pfähler are a team of two artists working with robotics and kinetic sculptures since 2012. Their work is playful yet technologically ambitious and well crafted. I met them in 2018 as fellow artists in And the Things We Do group show in Azkuna Zentroa, Bilbao Spain where they exhibited their intriguing flexible robots Vincent and Emily.
Carolin and Nikolas will be based in the FabLab at Cardiff Metropolitan University where they will spend 3 weeks making a new robotic installation.
Carolin Liebl and Nikolas Schmid Pfähler completed their art studies as a duo and with distinction at the University of Art and Design Offenbach am Main in 2017. In August 2018 they presented their second solo exhibition “WIR|ES” at the “CADORO – Centre for Art and Science”, Mainz. Their most recent group exhibitions include the “International Meeting of New Artistic Forms” at Azkuna Art Center in Bilbao, Spain (2018), the “Robotics – Festival of Art and Robotics” in Trieste, Italy (2018), the exhibition “inter_nal movements”, which was created as part of an artist-in-residence stay in 2018 at the Espronceda Center for Art & Culture in Barcelona, Spain, and the WRO Biennale in the National Museum Wroclaw, Poland (2017).
